Low to Ground Rockpile

Though it's hard to tell from this picture - this low to the ground rockpile actually sits on top of another rock.

This low to the ground cairn is in the same area - and shows considerable age.

Low to Ground Rockpile

All this week I will be posting pictures of the different types of contrustion at this same site. I believe it was occupied for many, many years. Some of these though, are hard to spot for the amount of underbrush that makes walking kind of rough on the lower legs since the area is full of jagger bushes that can easily trip you up besides cutting your legs.

Possible Burial?

This is one of - quite a few other low to the ground cairns -  in an area located just past Browns Farm (Laurel Hill Settlement) off of Sons of Italy Road in Lower Yoder. I shot this photo on zoom and I'm not sure if the red stone in the center is red oche or red standstone. Without looking at it closeup - I'd say it looks like red standstone.

I really didn't notice the use of red till I looked at all the other pictures I shot in the area. The use of color is very rare around here. I don't know why. But having said this - some of the other nearby rockpiles feature sunken, hollow centers - which are much more common in use. Either way - this is an area that I will be exploring more this spring - given the large concentration of Native American activity in the whole general area I have found in the past.

Large Rockpile

Though it's hard to tell from this picture. This rather large rockpile (abt 6 feet long) is along the top of a ridge line - that also contains a couple more piles of this size.

Simple little Rockpile

It just doesn't get any more beautiful than this - the simpleness of construction. It's like a calling card from the great beyond from the builder to me - "I was here and now...so are you".
